ABOUT
AZ Espinoza (they/he) is an afro-futurist-trans-masculine-feminist whose work depends on the movement of bodies, minds, collectives, and spirits towards rigorous and joyful liberation for all. As a playwright, director, mover, and maker they have developed a creative praxis grounded in community building and decolonial ritual practice. Trained initially as a historian, AZ grew up thinking he would be a human rights lawyer, then found his happy place in movement work as a human rights artist. AZ identifies as a child of immigrants, a son of Oyá, and a partner and parent in a family of fellow queer dreamers and schemers.
DIRECTOR
I create spaces of safety and recognition for Queer folx and members of the Global Majority so that we can dare audiences of all identities to accept wild invitations.
(PLAY)WRITER
I am an Afro-Futurist historian—blending time and space to offer myself healing from trauma, and to remind everyday radicals that magic is a revolutionary resource.
COLLABORATOR
As a mover and maker, leader and supporter, I gravitate to narratives and spaces committed to the embodiment of queer joy and new shapes for liberated lives.
EDUCATOR
I survived Harvard University (BA in History), University of London (MA in Media and Communication), and Villanova University (MA in Theatre) and have become a student of liberation everywhere and for everyone, starting in my own classrooms.
